Rob’s Turf Tip
Dealing with Drought
If you live in Saginaw Township, there is a good chance your lawn is dry. Most home lawns are seeded with Kentucky Bluegrass or Fescue, both of these turfgrasses will survive periods without water, if you follow these 2 easy steps.
#1- Keep wear off of the lawn while dry. Mowing your lawn is a form of wear (especially if you use a tractor), I have seen lawns that are dormant (completely brown and not growing) with fresh stripes from mowing equipment all over the Township. Not mowing dry grass is much easier to do if you mow your own lawn, lawn care companies may not let you pick and choose when they mow.
#2- If you are going to mow (to clean up leaves, or like the look of the stripes); try to mow before (or after) it is extremely hot out. The time to avoid mowing drought stressed grass is between 4 and 6pm. This is when the day’s temperature is hottest, and the humidity is lowest. This is also the time period when the most damage will occur. Good news for the homeowners that have a lawn care company mow for them, they usually are done before the “heat of the day”.
Pretty soon it will be fall, and everyone’s lawn will be green and beautiful again.
